Mercantile, Retail, and Hospitality Insurance for Your Calgary Business

Built on Relationships, Backed by Transparency

If customers walk through your door, you carry liability that a standard commercial property policy doesn’t fully address. Add perishable inventory, food service, or liquor licensing into the mix, and the risk profile gets more specific fast. We put together coverage programs for Calgary retailers, restaurants, and hospitality operators that account for what’s actually happening in your business, not just what fits in a template.

What Is Mercantile and Hospitality Insurance?

It's a combination of coverage built specifically for businesses that sell goods or serve the public. Most operations in this space need at a minimum: property protection for their space and stock, commercial general liability for customer-facing risk, and business interruption coverage in case something forces them to close temporarily.

Beyond that, the right program depends entirely on your operation. A clothing boutique in Inglewood has different exposures than a restaurant on 17th Avenue or a hotel near the airport. We look at the specifics before we recommend anything.

Key Coverages for Retail and Hospitality Businesses

Commercial General Liability

If a customer slips, a product causes harm, or a third party suffers property damage connected to your business, this is the coverage that responds. It covers legal defence costs, settlements, and medical expenses. Most commercial leases in Calgary require it as a condition of tenancy, and some suppliers and event organizers require proof before they work with you.

Commercial Property Insurance

Covers your physical space, fixtures, signage, equipment, and inventory against fire, theft, vandalism, and certain weather events. In Alberta, that includes hail, which can cause real damage to storefronts and rooftop equipment. If you're a tenant, this covers your improvements and your contents; the building itself is your landlord's problem. If you own the space, we cover that too.

Business Interruption Insurance

If a covered loss forces you to close, whether it's a fire, a burst pipe, or significant storm damage, business interruption coverage replaces the income you're losing while repairs are underway. For restaurants and retailers who operate on thin margins, even two weeks of downtime can be serious. This is the coverage that keeps the lights on while the doors are closed.

Product Liability Insurance

If you manufacture, distribute, or sell physical goods and a customer claims injury or property damage from one of your products, this coverage steps in. It matters for food producers, specialty retailers, and anyone bringing their own branded products to market.

Liquor Liability Insurance

Required for any Calgary business licensed to serve alcohol. If a patron causes harm after leaving your premises and alcohol is a factor, you can be held liable. This coverage is separate from your general liability policy, and Alberta's liquor licensing requirements make it non-negotiable for bars, restaurants, and event spaces.

Stock and Inventory Coverage

Your inventory is one of your most significant assets. This coverage protects against loss or damage from insured perils, including theft. For businesses that carry seasonal stock or high-value specialty goods, it's worth making sure your policy limits reflect the actual value of what's on your shelves.

Why Calgary Retail and Hospitality Businesses Need the Right Broker

Off-the-shelf business packages work for some operations. For retail and hospitality, they often leave gaps where it matters most: product liability sub-limits that don't match your actual sales volume, liquor liability that's excluded rather than included, or business interruption coverage that caps out before your rebuild timeline does. Calgary's insurance needs are shaped by local weather, property values, and community risks, and for hospitality businesses specifically, the stakes are high.

Food and alcohol can affect people in unpredictable ways, and regardless of how carefully you follow every regulation, the potential for liability still exists. A broker who understands the hospitality sector puts together a program that accounts for those realities before a claim surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need separate insurance if I rent my commercial space?

Yes. Your landlord’s insurance covers the building structure, not your contents, inventory, or liability. As a tenant, you need your own commercial property and liability coverage — and most Calgary commercial leases require it.

Is liquor liability included in my general liability policy?

Not automatically. Liquor liability is typically excluded from standard CGL policies and needs to be added or purchased separately. If you serve alcohol in any capacity, this needs to be addressed explicitly in your policy.

What happens to my coverage if I add a second location?

Your current policy won’t extend to a new location without an endorsement or a new policy. Let us know when you’re expanding, and we’ll make sure the coverage keeps up.

How are my inventory limits set?

Standard policies often use a fixed limit that may not reflect what your stock is actually worth, especially if you carry seasonal highs or specialty goods. We work with you to set limits based on your realistic maximum inventory value, not just an average.

Can Core insure a business that's had a prior claim?

In most cases, yes. Prior claims don’t automatically disqualify you, though they do affect how carriers price the risk. We’ll give you an honest picture of your options.
